Mitch Craun

Title:
Scientist

Education:
University of California, Santa Barbara: Ph.D. Control Theory

How did I get into space:

I’ve always been a space nut, ever since I was a child.  I got my first job in the aerospace industry by sneaking into a job fair at Stanford and impressing one of the hiring managers at the event.  I later got a job offer from that same manager.

Favorite Planet:

Earth, for obvious reasons.  I suppose Jupiter would be a close second as its large gravitational attraction helps protect us from comets.  However it can also deflect some asteroids closer to the inner solar system, making them more likely to hit Earth.  But hey, no one is perfect.

Hobbies:

My hobbies are rock climbing, sailing, video games, music festivals, and traveling (especially to Korea).

Why SSI:

SSI treats me well.  I am compensated well, and I get to work from home when the customer allows it.  I enjoy the consulting world as I get a wide exposure to the aerospace industry.  Each time I am assigned to a new customer I get the chance to learn all about the new project and work environment.  I feel like I will learn and grow more in this role than I would in another role at a regular aerospace firm.

Bio:

I received my Ph.D. in control theory from UC Santa Barbara.  I then worked at the Aerospace Corporation for 5 years doing mostly flight controls analysis for launch vehicles and spacecraft.  However, I wanted a role that was more design focused and eventually found that in a position at SSI, which allows me to do so on a wide variety of projects for various customers.
